All my boys have extensive vocabularies. It is not something I did to them on purpose, it is just how they are. They also are pretty clear talkers, so their highly honed language skills are especially evident to the folks who normally can't understand little ones.
Being such skilled talkers has been very rewarding for the boys, they get much attention and admiration because of this skill, so it is often difficult to get them to stop talking. I beg, I plead, I tear up, but once they get going, you might as well sit down and stay for a while. Every one loves to talk around here. There is also a dangerous predisposition (from their fathers side, of course) for them to start talking with SAT words about topics they know very little about, and not stop. This can be either comical or enfuriating, depending on wether I am being challenged or not. Evan in particular suffers from this affliction. And he is the child who watches lots of the science channel, so he enjoys a more scientific type vocabulary.
This evening we were dropping Matt off at his weekly gaming tournament in the husband's car. (A sedan as opposed to my truck) The devil dog hopped in with us, and I remarked 6 minutes from home that I had forgotten to remove the shock collar for her electric fence. In my truck, I know we are high enough to clear the electromagnetic field, but I wasn't sure about the sedan. I guessed she didn't get zapped, since we never heard the collar's warning beep or devil dog cry out in pain. Evan's reply to my utterance was " You know Dad's car is more electronically efficient than yours."
I swear he gets it from his father.
My daughter has the non-stop word-spew thing very, very badly. Occasionally, she says something that I have NO IDEA where she picked up. On Thanksgiving, she was sharing the story of a local youth group's "Fear Factor"-style competition. She was talking about the food challenge--which was canned octupus--and she said, "It didn't taste bad at all, but I have a really bad GAG REFLEX, so it took me about a minute longer to swallow it than it would have." Gag reflex?! She cracked up the whole room. Don't they understand that all that does is encourage her? :)
